The Chrismas Vacation That Wasn't

Our first day of break was a half-day, and by 4 in the afternoon 2 kids were down with fevers.  You know that it's going to be a long break when after only 4 hours your kids get sick.  There went most of our plans for vacation.  We were worried that we might have to pull out of the Chirstmas Eve festivities too (nothing says "Merry Christmas" like some viral infections, right?), but since the fevers were down by Saturday, we headed over for some family fun.

By Monday the 2 sickies were rebounding nicely, and we headed back to Nana's and Papa's to pick up the bikes (it was my first brand new bike since I was 12 and got my 10-speed), and take some spins on them.

Tuesday we spent teaching Davin how to ride his bike.  And Eric spent some quality time in the garage working on those cabinets.

By Wednesday we taught Davin how to turn, it's a good thing too, as he has a crazy magnetic pull towards parked cars.  Eric and I went to see Sherlock Holmes, leaving the kids with his sister.  But by the time we got back we found Maddie with a fever, a runny nose, and gooey eyes (yay pink eye!).  It makes you feel like an AWESOME parent to find out you left a super sick kid for a date.

Thursday we rode bikes some more, this time teaching Davin how to start on his own, and use his brakes properly.  Maddie napped, a lot, and Eric got more cabinet work done.

Friday Maddie was still sick.  So much for the zoo, or hiking, or just about anything now.  We did get some bike rides in, when the weather is in the 70's, why not spend as much time outside as you can, right?

Saturday was New Year's Eve, so I got us some good deli meat and cheese, some rolls, chips and lemon-aid to have a family feast.  We celebrated by teaching the kids how to have a silly string fight, and they how to clean up silly string, and threw snap-it's around on the back patio.  We then played Mousetrap (with the still sick Madeline), ate brownies, sent the girls to bed, and then played Pictionary on the wii with the boys.  With 8 am church the next morning the boys only got to stay up till 9.  Eric and I turned in around 10:30, but we were well aware of when midnight rolled around.

Monday, Maddie was still sick, and now coughing until she made herself sick.  I got Chrismas put away, and the house, mostly, cleaned up.  And Eric got the final lower cabinet finished and installed at his parent's house!!

By Tuesday Maddie was well enough for us to head over to the Library and feed the ducks (which was good because Eric was back at work).

Wednesday, our last day of vacation, the kids were finally healthy!! So we headed to the zoo for our last hurrah.  And it was so worth it!  We had a great time, and the weather was perfect for the zoo.

As I've said, it could have been worse.  We could have made it through all of break before the kids got sick, and then been home, longer.  As it was, Eric was home for that full week of break, which was so helpful.  Now, onto a new year and some more fun!!
