But, somehow, I still don't see my having one again for a rather long time.
You see, once upon a time (way back in college), Eric and I had cell phones. We had them for many years, until the lack of a job brought us to Arizona. We cut back on anything that wasn't essential, and a cell phone definately wasn't essential. It's gotten to the point that we just don't really care. Oh, don't get me wrong, I think that the new ones are pretty nifty, but really, who would I talk to or text? And until today, being cell phone free was all working out fine. (Although, I've decided that if the following events had happened at our old school, where Aidan had been for three years, and I had been a more active volunteer, none of this would have happened.)
Here's our own Comedy of Errors, of sorts: At 12:35 I loaded the kids up into the car to go and get Davin registered for Kindergarten. After arriving at the school, and unloading 3 kids, I noticed that they had registration times, and the next start time wasn't for 20 minutes. Not wanting to waste our outting, we went to Costco to get gas (3 miles away). By the time we were done and back at the school, it was 1 pm.
I went in, got our paper work all turned in (I was smart, I picked up the packet and filled it out at home first). While the secretary was making copies, she had us give the nurse our immunization records to double check. As I turned to go back to the secretary, I noticed my father-in-law. He had been called to pick up Aidan. I went back into the nurse's station, and asked about my son. And there he was, laying in the other room (he had a moderatly high fever). Apparently, after trying to reach me, and then Eric, the school called our emergency contacts. The irony of the whole thing is that I was at the school when they were trying to call me the first time. And I had been there for at least 5 minutes before Eric's dad showed up.
So, yes, if I had had a cell phone, none of this would have happened. As it is, I'm very grateful to our emergency contacts, it's nice to know that there are those you can count on in an emergency. I'll have to come up with a nice thank you, perhaps cookies, or maybe a key lime truffle?

So, Maybe I DO Need a Cell Phone...

You do have wonderful family close to you. And everything you said rings true--but how can you be everywhere at all times and known to all people? It will come.
Here's the opposite side: for the last 6 years, we haven't had a home phone, just cell phones. And frankly, if it had been me, the phone would have been ringing in the bottom of my bag, and if I could have gotten to it before it went to voicemail (unlikely), I wouldn't have recognized the number, and would have let it go to voicemail anyway. And voicemail doesn't get checked and answered (especially if the number isn't one I know) until after the real-live things that need to get done (like kindergarten registration) are finished.
So, if you are anything like me, it wouldn't have made any difference. Just a thought.
The same thing could've happened to you here because our school is a "dead zone" for many cell phones & I rarely get coverage there! P.S. I love your quilt - you are a woman of many talents!!
