Tuesday morning we headed over to North Ogden to a trout fish farm for our first adventure in fishing. Eric and I weren't so sure why we had to leave the house at 8:30 to be there at 9, right when it opened. But it was a good thing, by 10 am there were three bus groups there for the day, and by then we were done with our catch.
It was a hilarious experience. Of course, Davin was unhappy about fishing on the drive over, but loved it when we got there. In fact, he turned out to be quite the little fisherman. Of the 14 fish caught, he pulled out 6. At first, he hated the feel of the fish, and didn't want to touch it. But by the end he was quite anxious for Eric to pull the hook so he could deposit it into the bucket himself.
Aidan actually caught the first fish, but it flailed itself back in before we could catch it. Aidan did really well, he pulled out 4 (he caught 8 fish, but 4 of them weren't hooked tightly, and he lost them).
Eme was our lazy fisherman, she preferred to sit quietly in Papa's lap, just watching the fish in front of her. Still, she pulled out 3 on her own.
Eric spent most of his time unhooking the fish. I do have to say that I did, in fact, unhook 1 fish on my own-Eric was busy on another fish. I'm not too sure how to describe the experience, it was kind of funny really. I didn't want to touch the fish, so I kept telling Aidan to hold it tighter while I was trying to force the hook our of its upper lip. All I can say is that if my kids ever get a body piercing, I'll remove it with as much love and kindness that I showed that fish.

Lest anyone think that we came out of this adventure unscathed, let me enlighten you. The boys were so energetic about fishing, we were all terrified that someone would loose an eye the way the boys were turning with their hook and lines. Thankfully, that didn't happen. Instead both Maddie and Eme caught fishes to the head. Aidan spun fast with one of his fish and smacked Maddie in the face, and then shortly after Davin spun around really fast with one of his fish, and hit Eme in the head (as a bonus, Eric's dad got splashed too). Eric also snagged his finger on one of the hooks, nothing bad, it was just sore for the rest of the day.
The kids had a great adventure, and when we caught our fill of fish, Papa took the bucket up to the counter. The kids were so excited to see their fish again, but that excitement faded really quickly when they saw what was in store for their fish. After some shocked expressions at their beloved fish getting bludgeoned by a 12 year old girl, we thought it best to spare them the additional trauma of what would happen next. They made for a great dinner, or so I'm told, and it made for a great activity. I'm thinking some fishing poles might be in my kids futures, catch and release sounds fun. (yes, I can count, Eric's cousin caugth one too, thus 6+4+3+1=14, happy now Mom?)
